Join us for a unique wildlife experience in northern Spain. This guided tour combines the observation of both wildcats and Iberian wolves, two of the most elusive carnivores in Europe. Local experts lead you through the Riaño Mountains in the heart of the Picos de Europa Regional Park — an ideal trip for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
Wolves and Wildcats: Trip Overview
The Riaño Mountains are home to one of the highest densities of wildcats and wolves in the Iberian Peninsula. The diverse ecosystem, consisting of meadows, forests, rocky outcrops, and shrubland, provides an ideal habitat for these animals. Wolves feel safer in this secluded environment, and the summer heat is less intense here than in southern regions, which also makes it an ideal time for sightings.
Wildcats can be observed throughout the year, but the best time for sightings is from late July. At this time of year, wildcats can be spotted from 4×4 vehicles or from strategically placed hides, offering exceptional viewing and photography opportunities. In particular, we search for them in the early morning, when they hunt voles and mice.
To increase our chances of spotting wolves, we visit remote valleys of the Cantabrian Mountains. During this time of year, wolves are raising their pups in high-altitude scrublands. Their diet mainly consists of large ungulates such as deer and wild boar, along with a variety of smaller prey.
These remote wolf populations rarely attract wildlife watchers or photographers, as locating them requires extensive knowledge of the terrain and good physical preparation. Our expert guides, thanks to their experience, make sure you have the highest probability of spotting these animals.
This is a rare opportunity to combine the observation of both wildcats and Iberian wolves in one trip — an unforgettable wildlife experience!
