Oviedo has a history that dates back to the Middle Ages. Your guide leads you through Oviedo and through time, when you explore the Medieval remainders of what once was the royal seat of the Kings of Asturias. Oviedo, Origin del Camino
In the 9th century, the then King of Asturias, Alfonso II, heard about a mysterious tomb found in the woods in Galicia. He embarked on a quest to see this tomb himself. It appeared to be the resting place of the Apostle James (Santiago in Spanish). Surely, he could not have imagned that centuries later, millions of pilgrims would literally follow in his footsteps. The famous Camino de Santiago was born, and its origin lies in Oviedo!
Throughout the year, and especially in summer, dozens of pilgrims start to walk the Camino Primitivo each day. It’s very likely you stumble upon a few of them during your tour. Your guide can tell you everything about the Camino de Santiago and has many first-hand stories and anecdotes about this famous route.

Visiting the interior of Oviedo’s cathedral
The Cathedral of San Salvador is the highlight of Oviedo. Not only is it the most remarkable building in the city, but it has also played a major role in the development of the city. Moreover, thousands of pilgrims visit the Cathedral each year while walking the Camino de Santiago.
