Have you heard about the Camino de Santiago and even considered walking one of its itineraries (yes, there are multiple routes!)? But you do not have the possibility to take a few weeks off? Or are you doubting whether you are able to hike 20-30 km for multiple days in a row? This tour offers you the possibility to be a pilgrim for half a day by walking part of the ‘Camino Primitivo’.

Camino Primitivo, the oldest Camino de Santiago

Among the many ‘Caminos’ that can be walked nowadays, the Camino Primitivo is the oldest one. The first one to walk this route was the Asturian King Alfonso II at the beginning of the 9th century, after the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle James. Most of the current route still follows this ancient path. We we will follow in the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims by walking the first part of the Camino Primitivo.

During this tour, we walk the first 12 km (approx. 7.5 miles) of the Camino Primitivo. Starting in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias and Origin del Camino, we then walk through the picturesque Asturian countryside, enjoying breathtaking views and getting to know each other and fellow pilgrims!

Please check the group discount button for more info on the prices per group. The minimum number of people required to do the tour is 2. If you want to do the tour alone, you can, but you have to pay the price for 2 persons. If you want to do this tour with more than 8 persons, please consult us for a customized proposal.

Would you like to combine walking part of the Camino de Santiago with a tour visiting Oviedo? Check our tour visiting the highlights of Oviedo here!

Overview

Starting at the Oviedo Cathedral, we will walk through meadows and climb some challenging hills. Along the route, we will pass a chapel where you can stamp your own- and probably first- pilgrim credential! The route leads through the lovely Asturian landscape including some small villages where we will stop to eat some bocadillos (typical Spanish sandwiches). The walk ends in the village ‘Venta de el Escamplero’ where we can find a typical pilgrim albergue. Along the way, we will share specific insights with you about the Asturian history, gastronomy and nature. Although we’ll be guiding you and telling you stories about Asturias, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the landscape in silence and meet other pilgrims in order to get a real ‘taste of the Camino’!

The trip includes:

  • An official 'Credencial del Peregrino' in which you'll receive your first stamps today!
  • 1 casadiella (typical Asturian pastry)
  • 1 bottle of water
  • 1 bag of local potato chips
  • Taxi back to Oviedo

Additional costs:

  • Expenses (food, souvenirs) along the way

FAQs

Is this tour suitable for children?

In principle, we are very happy to take children with us on this tour! However, kids should be used and able to hike for multiple hours in a row along a diverse terrain (hills, forests) under various weather conditions (heat, heavy rain). Therefore, we recommend this tour to children over 12 years old with hiking experience, always accompanied by an adult.

What do I need to bring?

First of all, an open attitude to experience a bit of the ‘Camino feeling’ and connect to fellow pilgrims! More practically, it is important to bring the following items:
Appropriate (hiking) shoes; comfortable, rainproof clothes; sunscreen and something to protect your head; cash to pay for the transportation back by bus or taxi (between 2 and 10 euros p.p); additional food and drinks for the way (optional); money for food and drinks on the way (optional).

Do I need to be trained to be able to participate in this tour?

In principle, we especially designed this tour for people who are not used to hike 20-30 km for multiple days in a row. The first part of the route leads through Oviedo, which is a relatively flat and easy track. The second part leads through some hills and forests, which requires a good basic condition and proper footwear. What can make the tour especially challenging are the severe weather conditions (heat, heavy rain), which also requires a proper outfit and protection.

I want to continue hiking after the endpoint of this tour. Is that possible?

Yes! The ‘official’ itinerary adds another 12 km to the route and ends in Grado. From there, you can either take a bus or train back to Oviedo, or stay for one or more nights (perhaps even in one of the pilgrim albergues) to visit Grado and surroundings. If you are thinking about extending the tour, we have another tour for you that provides you with all the information that you need to walk the second part of the trip on your own (see our 8-hour activity ‘A Taste of the Camino de Santiago’).

I am not able to join this tour on the selected dates. Is there a possibility to select another date?

Yes! Contact us at info@intoasturias.com, tell us about your preferred dates and we will do our best to meet your preferences!

How do I book this tour?

You can book this tour via the menu on the upper right side of the screen. Click ‘check availability’, select a tour date and fill in the number of adult travelers. Then click ‘book now’. A new screen opens which indicates the final price (including group discount if applicable). You can then pay for the tour via our online payment system ‘stripe’ or via Paypal express. You will receive a confirmation email. Please check your ‘junk’ or ‘spam’ email box since sometimes, our confirmation email ends up there. A few days before the tour, you will receive an email with the last information (where to meet, what to bring etc.).

I am no longer able to participate in this tour. How do I cancel it?

The possibility to cancel a tour depends on the reasons and timing. For more information, please check ‘Cancellation Policy’ under the Terms and Conditions on this website.

  1. Such an incredible experience!

I thoroughly enjoyed my “taste” of the Camino de Santiago. Debora is a warm and friendly person, and she made it feel more like a hike with friends than meeting people for the first time. She was also very encouraging when the trail was a bit difficult for me. The experience was unique and special. If you are interested in the Camino de Santiago but only have a short time in Oviedo, this experience would be perfect for you.

  2. Great Experience!

Debora made the Taste of the Camino Santiago our best event in Spain. She met us promptly, went over the agenda and we were on our way. She found something in common or to personally connect upon with each of our group members. This experience commences at the beautiful Cathedral and you pass the metal gold colored scallops while in the city as you progress on the Primitivo section of the trail. Once in the countryside, you pass by the traditional scallop markers and religious chapels. Debora is very enthusiastic, intuitive and paced the group according to its needs and desires. She made sure we had water and she even brought a few surprise treats. At the end of route for the day on the trail, we insisted Debora stay with us for a light refreshment. Totally worth the time to do this trip with Debora!

Debora was a fantastic guide for the El Camino Santiago!! She communicated with us before hand and kept us up to date. Explaining how to get to the cathedral could improve, but so minor in the whole experience. She was very knowledgeable about the Camino and sights along the way. I am 68 and in fair shape. The hike was a challenge, but she was very considerate and encouraging. I finished and it was an amazing experience. Plus, we had a beautiful day. Debora also had s walking stick for me that was a great help!

As it happened, I was the only participant on the day which turned out to be a big plus. Debora is a sincere, kind and friendly person with an excellent knowledge of the Camino and the Asturian countryside. She is highly educated and the walk passed most agreeably. At all times she was mindful of how I was coping with it, but she needn’t have worried – it was the most pleasant 4-5 hours I’d spent on my brief stay in northern Spain!

We really enjoyed our taste of the Camino de Santiago! The hike is not too challenging and Debora was a lovely and knowledgeable guide. She provided us with snacks, a pilgrims’ pass and a lot of information about the region of Asturias and the Camino. As Debora has been living in Asturias for a while, she is also able to give good recommendations about what to do and where to eat in the area. We would definitely recommend this tour, if you would like to be a pilgrim for a day and explore Asturias’ beautiful landscape!

  6. Oviedo Walking tour

It was a perfect way to experience the famous pilgrimage, but on a smaller scale. Something that may get you to take on the complete trail someday. Debora was an expert not only on historical facts, she was an expert on the local wildlife and environment. A must when in Oviedo!

  7. First steps on the trail

In September 2021 I visited Asturias and joined Debora from intoAsturias on a half-day hike walking the first steps of the Camino Primitvo. Not having any experience with hiking at all, she made me feel comfortable and capable. We started at the Cathedral in Oviedo where the rich history of the Camino is visible on every street corner, through scallops or stories, past a very nice bakery for some delicious snacks and into the mountains. During our walk she shared the great history of Asturias with me; from culture to architecture, agriculture to cuisine, Debora is a very knowledgable guide and her stories make the hike even more enjoyable. intoAsturias offers unique experiences with a personal touch and I am very happy I got the opportunity to book this excursion. It even inspired me to one day return and continue the Camino.

  8. Lovely day on the Camino

What a great tour! Debora met my niece and I at the designated starting point and we set out on the streets of Oviedo toward the countryside following the Camino Primitivo. Debora shared interesting bits about Oviedo, it’s history and about Asturias. She was easy to talk with, very knowledgeable about the Camino and the ways of the pilgrims making the journey. The route was a perfect little taste of the larger Camino, and it was so nice to get out into the hills outside of Oviedo and experience the nature of Asturias. She even had Trail Passports for us which we stamped at one of the spots along our walk. We ended the walk at a lovely little cafe, had a much appreciated cold drink, followed by a cab ride right back to our hotel. If you want to see a bit of the lovely country outside Oviedo, I highly recommend taking a walk with Debora.

The highlight of my trip - beyond seeing my daughter who just moved to Oviedo - was this guided Camino hike with Debora. She is just an outstanding guide: highly informative about the Camino, Asturias, local foods and even Spanish history. Debora was helpful, too, in suggesting other must see Oviedo/Asturias venues. They don't get any better than Debora. We'll be looking her up on our next trip here in February.

  11. Wonderful Introduction to the Camino Primitivo

The day on the Camino was special and enriched my journey. Debora gives a lot of background information that brings the history of the Camino to life and she is open to questions. You learn a lot in a pleasant personal atmosphere. There were only two of us and we were able to exchange ideas. This excursion is a wonderful introduction to the spirit of the Way and gives you a feeling for the challenges that await you when you actually walk it for a long time. Super!

Debora reached out in advance to let us know when and where she would pick us up. She was very knowledgeable and personable. She was also very flexible in terms of what our preferences were. She really thought of everything in advance to make our experience optimal. We would highly recommend her!

  13. Great experience to get out of the city and experience a little of the Camino
    By Kim

    April 24, 2024
We had a wonderful experience with Debora on a part of the primitivo Camino. We walked for 12 km. After a brief walk through Oviedo, you are fairly quickly immersed in the Asturian countryside. We saw lots of cows, horses, and chickens along the way. Be prepared for some pretty steep inclines and declines, but Debora always checked on everyone’s comfort level and there were three stops along the way for snacks and drinks. We also learned about the history of the Camino and Asturian life in general. This is a great experience for anyone who wants to get out of the city and experience a little of the Camino.
